Minimum expectation on length of the school week

On the 28th March 2022 the DfE published information about the expectation that all mainstream state-funded schools should provide a school week of at least 32.5 hours by September 2023.

Hawthorn Primary School currently is open for 30 hours and 50 minutes per week - this means to reach the minimum expectation we will have to extend the school day by 20 minutes.

We are currently in the planning stages for this - as it has implications for staffing and budget.

These are the steps in the process:

Under Government regulations  - I have to give parents sufficient notice to adjust the length of the the school day - ie the start time and end time of school.

This is the process the Academy is to follow…

  1. The headteacher draws up plans to change the school day.
  2. The headteacher presents the plans to the Academy Committee who discuss and scrutinise them.
  3. The school consults with parents and other stakeholders - teaching staff / support staff / admin staff /  site staff/ childminders etc
  4. The headteacher and other senior leader analyses the responses, and presents them to the Academy Committee and Trust board
  5. The Trust board considers the responses, and decides whether to go ahead with the proposed changes
  6. The start time of any changes are published.
